As Frame Engineer, together with the Joint Engineers, you will become an expert on the mechanical aspect of the exoskeleton. You will work together with other team members to create an integrated design of the different components. As a Frame Engineer you will mainly focus on the frame of the exoskeleton: the bones, hip and backpack. In doing so, you take into account requirements from other team members, for example guiding cables and other electronics over the bones in order to supply power to the exoskeleton. Are you not afraid of CAD and FEM programs? Are you creative and don't give up easily ? Then this is the perfect function for you!
You are responsible for the design of the static mechanical parts of the exoskeleton. Next year you will start thinking about how to improve the fourth MARCH exoskeleton as much as possible in the run-up to the Cybathlon of 2020. Do you choose for a completely new concept of a certain component or do you decide to make an existing part even better? As Frame Engineer, your main focus will be on the bones, backpack and the hip structure. Everything should come together here: the electronics will have to get a place, the joints have to be fixed to the frame, the connecting pieces have to be connected to the pilot and you may want to take into account a certain degree of adjustability. With well-developed analytical skills, creativity and collaboration you will be able to fulfill this function.
The exoskeleton is a machine that interacts with humans. That is why it is very important that the entire exoskeleton is safe and strong enough! During the year you will perform many tests in terms of strength and safety, after which you will design the new model in CAD programs and perform FEM analyses. You will also cooperate a lot with the pilot. In this way you ensure that the pilot completely trusts your exoskeleton!
Finally, as a Frame Engineer you are involved in the production process of the various components. At the start of the year you will learn a lot about various production techniques. You gain this knowledge by practicing on production machines in the D-Dreamhall, such as 3D-printers, CNC-machine, or laminating equipment. Afterwards you will apply this knowledge into your design. You will be able to advise the entire team on the manufacturability of different parts. When the new design is ready, it is time to actually start producing. This can be outsourced to partners or done in-house at the D-Dreamhall, which has CNC, turning and milling machines.
Desired skills and experience
Preferred: End (HBO/WO) bachelor or master in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Design or comparable.
Preferred: Experience with Finite Element Methods (FEM)
Knowledge of 2D or 3D design and production in CAD programs (e.g. Solid Works, CATIA)
Skilled in the use numerical computing programs (Matlab / Python / Excel / LabView etc.)
Basic knowledge of Statics, Mechanics, Material Science and Integrated Product Design.
Creative and analytical skills
Able to communicate technical knowledge clearly
Experience with working in groups, projects and/or committees
