Introduction

Dear reader,

The past month has flown by. March was a crazy busy month for us. Technical deadlines were followed up by non-technical deadlines. Besides that a visit to the EPP Group Bureau Meeting in Valencia was on our planning, the time had come for our own in-house event: The Design Presentation of MARCH III. All together it was a very busy, but especially a very fun month full of new experiences. In this newsletter we will provide you with a detailed report of all that we had in March.

Have fun reading!

Valencia
Past month four teammembers of MARCH III have travelled to Valencia to participate in the EPP Group Bureau Meeting. This Congress of the EPP was set up to obtain new impressions and inspiration for their future policy. A big chance for the team of Project MARCH to show the exoskeleton to this audience. It might even be a first entrance to creating international governmental support for our technology. During these three days we have met several members of the European Parliament, for example the spanish Carlos Moedas: European commisionar for Research, Science and Innovation. Also the Dutch representatives of the EVP, Wim van de Camp en Lambert van Nistelrooij, came to visit our stand at this congress. And last but definitely not least we got the chance to discuss our exoskeleton with the Prime-minister of Spain: Mariano Rajoy Brey. All together it was a very successful congress for Project MARCH. And besides that, we have also enjoyed the city itself ofcourse...

Design Presentation

This month we could finally present our new design of the MARCH at our Design Presentation: the MARCH III. In August 2017 our team began with the design of the new prototype exoskeleton. We started with 22 students and one, new, pilot. Brainstorm sessions, ideas and detailed concepts we're followed up by each other. From this brainstorm we came up with a definitive choice for a continuation of the MARCH series. In this new prototype everything is about improvement. Improvement of the technology that already exists. But of course we will also implement innovations: We want to make the next step on our journey to a wheelchair free future. This all has led to the design of the MARCH III. With proud we could present this to almost 500 visitors in the TU Delft Auditorium. Besides that the events was also followed by a lot of people via our Livestream, which is still publicly available at our YouTube channel. After the presentation all visitors got the chance to discuss the technical features with our engineers at the Tech expo. And, of course, to toast at the new design with a glass of champagne. It was an amazing night for our team and we look back at it with a lot of good memories.

Technische update

Meet MARCH III

As the Design Presentation of MARCH has past, we can finally provide you with more inside in the new functions of the MARCH III. In short all new functionalities are presented in the render video. You can watch this video by clicking here.

There are three important focuspoints at the base of the new design: Freedom, Comfort and Safety.

To provide comfort the design of the exoskeleton features extra support points. These points are placed around the tail bone to decrease the pressure at this point and thus to decrease the chance of decubitus. Besides that, risers have been added to the design. This are two supportpoints that closely follow the back of the pilot and provide extra support and stability to the core-area. The risers are 3D printes and made out of flexile material, so that the shape of the body of the pilot can be closely followed at all times. Finally the lower leg fixtures of the exoskeleton have been made detachable. This enables the pilot to put on the exoskeleton suit a lot easier and therefore contributes to the overall comfort of the suit.

And finally the MARCH III focuses on the freedom that the exoskeleton provides to the pilot. This freedom applies to the use of MARCH in daily life situations. By implementing a variable step size gait, it is possible use the MARCH in varying situations.

Upcoming month

Production & Assembly

Before the MARCH III was presented to the big crowd, our 3D model was already finished for a while. After meeting this deadline, our technical drawings had to be made in a short period to be able to initiate the production in time. Within now and the upcoming three weeks the first parts of the MARCH III will arrive at our office and we will thus be able to start the assembly of the MARCH. For our team this is of course the moment of thruth: At this point all different subprojects will come together and we'll get to see if the different parts fit and of course if the exoskeleton works. We will test this by means of an 'airgait'. The first time that we will actually let the exoskeleton walk in the air. We keep you posted with all the progress.

New team

The first half of our year in the D:DREAMhall has past and therefore it is time to look forward to the formation of the new team: MARCH IV. After our busy interestdrinks the deadline for application has past as well. All the job interviews were held and we hope to announce the new team of Project MARCH in the next month. Afterwards all new teammembers will meet eachother for the first time. Very exciting!

Crowdfunding tours

Finally, this month two tours through the D:DREAMhall are scheduled for some donators of our crowdfunding campaign #WhyMARCH. On these two nights the donators will get the chance to meet the new design of the mARCH III and we will ofcourse show them all the secret places of the D:DREAMhall. We are really looking forward to this!

Lastly

Clearly there is enough to do at MARCH Headquaters in the upcoming weeks. April is a month where especially in the technical field a lot of work will be done to make sure that we can make the airgate in May a great succes. But, also for us, it is time to go back to work. See you next month!
