Sven Bergsma

As Mechanical Design Engineer, Sven contributes to the development of mechanical systems for the exoskeleton. He is interested in designing components that are not only strong and functional, but also safe, manufacturable and comfortable for the pilot. By considering biomechanics, production methods and the interaction between mechanical components from the start, he aims to help create a reliable exoskeleton that supports natural movement.

Sven is currently studying Biomechanical Engineering and brings experience from several healthcare-focused engineering projects. He designed a quick-connect system for lower-leg prostheses, including multiple safety mechanisms. He also worked on a wheelchair-mounted robotic arm that can be controlled by people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy using electromyography, which measures muscle signals. At a research group, Sven contributed to a test setup for a soft-robotic heart replacement and developed prototypes for replacement heart valves.

Project MARCH appeals to Sven because it combines innovative technology with a direct contribution to society and healthcare. Ever since childhood, he has wanted to help people who use wheelchairs walk again. This year, he hopes to strengthen his understanding of biomechanics and biodynamics, learn to design with specific manufacturing processes in mind, and produce a component using CNC-machining. Alongside contributing to improved mobility for people with spinal cord injuries, Sven hopes to develop both technical expertise and lasting professional connections.
